6 Tips for Running This Winter

465211731

If you’re running outside during the winter, you have our respect! It takes intense dedication and commitment to stick to it during the colder months.

But, we do want to make sure you stay safe and get the most out of your running experience this winter. So here’s some tips for doing just that:

  1. Wear at Least 2 Layers

If you’re running a short distance, you only need 2 layers to stay warm. If you’re going to run for a longer period of time, 30 minutes or more, you should add a 3rd layer.

  1. Make Sure You Have the Right Footwear

You follow basically the same rule, no matter which type of shoe you decide to wear. Make sure your shoe fits your foot comfortably, and double-check that’s still the case when you move around in it, and finally ensure you have the right tread for running over your chosen surface.

If you’re running on smooth, slippery surfaces like icy sidewalks, you want shallower tread with a standard pattern. If you run on trails, you want deeper, more aggressive tread to catch on the changing surfaces.

  1. Get a Plan B

When you run outside in cold temperatures, make sure you don’t go too far from home. Or if you do, plan your route so you have somewhere warm to quickly access in the event of an emergency.

  1. Hydrate Anyway

Thirst feels a lot different when you run in cold weather. It doesn’t seem to be as important to take regular drinks. But nonetheless, your body still perspires in cold weather and you need to hydrate yourself before, during, and after your run. Most hypothermia cases happen when people don’t sufficiently hydrate before running.

  1. Watch for Warning Signs of Hypothermia

If temperatures fall below freezing, ice crystals can form on your skin. If you experience intense shivering when running, stop immediately and get to a warm location.

It’s the first warning sign of hypothermia, and soon other symptoms of the condition will follow:

  • Drop in your body temperature
  • Inability to perform complex tasks
  • Slurred speech
  1. Care for Your Skin

Running’s a good thing, but your feet take a beating. And if you haven’t run in a while, you can get blisters and you will start to form callouses.

If you use Happy Feet’s soothing foot lotion and balm, that helps nourish, hydrate, and revitalize your skin, stopping pain and helping you relax!

So even though it’s tough going running in the winter, following those tips makes it a little easier and a lot more fun.

Soothe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with Thermogenic Lotion

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a common nerve disorder that affects between 4-10 million Americans. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist and can be caused by a number of factors including the anatomy of your wrist, certain underlying health problems, and possibly patterns of hand use.

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the palm side of your wrist. Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include numbness, tingly, and eventually hand weakness. Many people try to “shake out” their hands to relieve the tingling or numbness. Persistent symptoms can interfere with normal activities and sleep patterns, and if that happens, you should see a doctor because if left untreated, permanent nerve and muscle damage can occur.

If you’re experiencing discomfort in your wrist and hand due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, a thermogenic lotion like Happy Feet & Body lotion can help alleviate the symptoms. The unique balm & lotion formula creates a thermogenic effect on the applied areas, generating energy. This helps improve dilation of blood vessels, increasing circulation and efficiently carrying essential oxygen and nutrients wherever you apply it. Combining the formula can help reduce the ache in your carpal tunnel.

What are the Benefits of Guarana Extract?

What are the Benefits of Guarana Extract?

Technically called Paullinia Cupana Seed, but more commonly known as Guarana Extract, this naturally-occurring substance acts as a treatment for cellulite. Guarana Extract is one of the natural ingredients found in Happy Feet & Body Formula lotion.

In nature, the Guarana plant is native to the Amazon River, and especially so in Brazil.  Its fruit is approximately the size of a coffee bean.  Herbivores pass over the plant because its seeds contain a high amount of caffeine, which they don’t prefer to consume.

Europeans first learned about the plant in the 16th century, and it became available commercially in 1958.

How is it Harvested?

Farms both large and small grow Guarana, which is then harvested by hand when the weather is dry.  The berries are checked individually to see if they are ripe.  The red skins are removed, and the seeds are roasted.  They then get mashed in a wooden mortar, which then has water applied, and then the seeds are molded into cylinders and left to dry in the sun.  Finally, they’re smoked in huts for several weeks to add flavor.

Now you know a little bit of the background of Guarana – so let’s get to the good stuff.  What does it actually do for you?

A few things:

  1. Helps You Lose Weight – When used along with damiana and yerba mate, Guarana may promote weight loss.  It may do so by convincing the mind that the body is full.  However, it works best with a low-fat diet and exercise, so make sure you do all those together to lose weight in a healthy way.
  2. Skintoning – You’ll often find this substance in skin-care and anti-aging products because of its skin-toning properties.  Caffeine helps reduce skin puffiness and makes your skin appear smoother, thereby making you appear younger.
  3. Reduces pain – Painful conditions like migraines and rheumatism can be alleviated with Guarana.
  4. Increases cognitive ability – The January 2007 issue of the Journal of Pharmacology (pgs 65-70) discussed a study which showed Guarana helps improve memory, stabilizes your mood, and improves mental clarity.
  5. May decrease risk of heart disease and thrombosis – Okay, here comes some complicated language:  the caffeine, catechins, and epicatechines are thought to be responsible for helping your body in this regard.

How are you going to use it to improve your life?

Need a Good Source of Antioxidants? Introducing Acai Berry Oil…

Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Oil also known as Acai Berry Oil is one of the natural ingredients in Happy Feet Formula. It possesses an impressive combination of Omega 6 and Omega 9 essential fatty acids, phytosterols, vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids.

acai

Here’s what WebMD has to say about acai berry oil:

“Some studies show that acai fruit pulp has a very high antioxidant capacity with even more antioxidant content than cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, or blueberry…For now, plenty of research supports eating a diet rich in antioxidants…Studies show that acai oil may be a safe alternative to other tropical oils used in beauty products such as facial and body creams.”

So there is credible research out there supporting the benefits of acai oil.

How Does Acai Oil Help Your Health?

There are actually a number of different uses for acai oil, so it helps you in a number of different ways.  Here’s what it does for you:

  • Reduces free radical damage and helps you look younger – As your body uses oxygen, the by-products of the process form free radicals.  These cells are also formed when you smoke, breathe air pollution, drink poison, or eat fried foods, and they cause damage to your body.  Antioxidants reduce this damage, so acai berry oil helps reduce the damage caused by free radicals, which makes your skin appear younger and healthier.

Acai is also naturally moisturizing, restores your skin’s elasticity, and is quickly absorbed by your body.

  • Minimizes inflammation and muscular achesThe Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry supports this claim with a new study.   Velutin, a flavone found in acai berry, is believe to be the substance that promotes inflammation and ache reduction.  Some beauty creams can cause a host of problems if you use them improperly.  Acne, easy bruising, and undesired skin bleaching, among many others, may be some results of inappropriate use.

  • It could help you lose weight – Some companies make incredible claims about acai’s ability to help you lose weight.  They can do this because supplements don’t have their advertising regulated as closely as prescription drugs.  WebMD says acai can help with weight loss if you use it as part of an overall healthy diet, but it won’t help you reduce your weight dramatically.

The Only Catch…

If you have a high sensitivity to pollen or other berries similar to acai, you should avoid exposure to acai berry, as that could cause an allergic reaction.

Other than that, acai berry is completely safe and works to promote the natural health of your skin, reduces inflammation, and may even help you lose a little weight.

Top 4 Post-Workout Benefits of Thermogenic Lotions

Top 4 Post-Workout Benefits of Thermogenics LotionsHey fitness buffs, have you ever considered using thermogenics after working out?  What, you haven’t heard of thermogenics?  Or maybe you’ve only been taking them before your workout.

Hey, that’s okay – that’s why we’re writing this article.  At a scientific level, they help the body heat up faster through metabolic stimulation.

How does that actually help you?  Check out these top benefits of using thermogenic lotions after you work out:

1. You Smell Fresh

You work out hard for an hour or two, and you expect to not smell so pleasant.  But what if you could smell fresh?  Applying a thermogenics lotion post-workout can make that happen.

2. You’ll Lose Weight

The best way to use thermogenics is by treating them as part of an overall health improvement program.  They do have an appetite suppressing (and fat burning) effect, reducing your need to eat after your workout.  That means you’ll have an easier time burning more calories than you consume.

Just make sure you don’t rely on thermogenics exclusively to lose weight.  Instead, focus on healthy dieting and exercise, and use the thermogenic lotion to help reduce your need to eat.

3.  Raise Your Mood and Mental Awareness

You know how often times you feel like all your energy is used up and you’re ready to crash after your workout?  Well, you can avoid that crash by using a thermogenic lotion afterwards.  You can keep your energy and focus, making morning workouts possible if they weren’t already in the past.

4.     They Get Absorbed by Your Body Better

Some research suggests that your body keeps burning calories after you work out.  This seems to particularly be the case if you exercise very vigorously for a prolonged period of time.  If you apply thermogenic lotion during the minutes after your workout, you may enhance this effect.

Ultimately, your individual results will vary because everyone’s body is slightly different.  But do keep in mind that thermogenic lotions do have post-workout benefits, and at least consider giving them a try to see what particular benefits they produce for you.

Then you can enjoy the newer, more fit, you!

4 Reasons for Slow Wound Healing in Diabetics

People with diabetes may often experience slow or limited wound healing. Wounds include cuts, scrapes, scratches, and punctures and typically occur after an accident or injury. Surgical incisions, sutures, and staples also cause wounds. Delayed wound healing is when a wound has trouble healing or staying closed.

There are several factors that influence wound healing in patients with diabetes including:

  1. Poor circulation
Patients who have had diabetes for several years may have fatty deposits in their arteries which slow blood flow down and cause poor circulation. Poor circulation limits the amount of oxygen and healing nutrients that are able to reach a wound.
  2. Nerve damage
Diabetes can lead to diabetic neuropathy, a form of nerve damage that causes numbness in the feet. When diabetic patients suffering from neuropathy don’t feel the skin of their feet well, they won’t notice things like shoes rubbing against one area and causing a callus to form on the bottom of the foot. The callus puts pressure on the deeper layers of the skin. In many cases, this pressure causes a blood blister to form under the callus. The blood blister softens the callus from the inside and when the center of the callus deteriorates, it becomes an open sore.
  3. Immune system issues
To heal a wound, the body must clear away dead and damaged tissue and build new skin cells. Unfortunately, immune cells do not work efficiently when blood sugar levels are high. High sugar levels in the blood can cause water to soak into some tissues and seep out of others in unusual ways. When tissues do not have their usual water balance, cells may not function perfectly to heal a wound.
  4. Infection
Infected wounds must be treated before it can begin to heal. It is common for wounds to develop infections in people with poorly controlled diabetes.

It’s all a blur: could diabetes be impairing your vision?

Blurred Vision

If you’ve noticed your vision becoming more blurred and are contemplating a visit to the eye doctor, you may want to get your blood sugar checked instead.

Blurry vision can be a temporary problem caused by diabetes. High levels of blood sugar cause the lens of the eye to swell, changing your ability to see. To correct the blurriness and begin seeing straight again, your blood sugar needs to return to the target range. It may take up to three months after your blood sugar is well-controlled before your vision is restored to normal.

People with diabetes should refrain from getting new glasses or contacts until their blood sugar levels have been well-controlled for at least two months. New glasses or contacts that are prescribed before the swelling has gone down will no longer work after the swelling has subsided.

While blurred vision occurs when something is wrong with the lens of the eye, worse damage can also happen to the blood vessels in the retina, which is located in the back of the eye.

After numerous years of high blood sugar levels, the walls of the blood vessels in the retina become weak and thin. These weak areas can bulge out and form pouches (known as micro-aneurysms). These areas can leak exudate, which is a fatty protean which, if leaked into the center of the retina, can cause swelling and make it difficult to see. If left untreated, these changes in vision can be permanent.

The American Diabetes Association offers the following eye care guidelines for people with diabetes:

  • Have an annual dilated eye exam if you are between the ages of 10 and 29 and have had diabetes for at least 5 years.
  • Have an annual dilated eye exam if you are above the age of 30, regardless of how long you’ve had diabetes.
  • Get a dilated eye exam if you are pregnant (or planning to become pregnant).

Good blood sugar control along with regular eye exams are the best things diabetic patients can do to prevent or control eye changes related to diabetes. To learn more about symptoms of diabetes, click here.
